Seven months on a flash game, can you believe?

Posted by AdamIpsen - June 4th, 2011

It's been seven months since I started working on Ortus's script on a 9-5 basis, slaving over the different character choices and plot developments. I've been playing RPGs since I was 12 (27 now), and I can say without a doubt that I've never seen a game with this many endings since Chrono Trigger.

That said, the endings for Chrono Trigger were sort of a bit hit and miss - it's not like you could turn Chrono evil or anything. Though exactly what Chrono would say as an evil villain would probably be the same. How do you make "..." sound evil?

I digress; unlike most games, these endings aren't simply a last minute choice - the entire game takes several different paths. So in essence, we're making several different games - which is why the entire thing is taking so long =)

Today I decided to put in some dialogue where you're taking to generic evil guy A, and you decide to talk about the eating habits of chickens. What other game gives you this sort of option? And this is a flash game! Revolutionary, I tell you.

A lot of people have compared BWK to Diablo and Dragon Age - I was a bit surprised since I'd never played Diablo, but Jazza showed me a few screens. I think the RPG market has stagnated a bit lately - there's only a handful of fantasy RPG titles around. This might also have something to do with the demise of the PS domination towards XBox games, and therefore the lack of JRPGs on the market. I'm just glad nobody ever compared us to Fable =)

My one lament - If only Jack Frosts were not copyrighted by Atlus, I'd throw one into Ortus - who can resist their awesome hee-ho'eyness =P See ya later, hee ho!

Get back to work. And write me more dialogue options to talk about chickens! and add more potatoes to the conversations will you!

But-but-but, it's suuunndaaay masstteerrr! *Adopts hunchbacked stance* Fine, Adams will get to work then massage the master's bunions later...

Request accepted: One "Fiddle dee dee, potaters" pending for plot insert =D

Ha ha! The eating habits of chickens, eh? Well, I would bet that the evil generic guy "A" would say something about "Flesh of the innocent" or maybe "Chickens eat their rape victims" (depends on how demented he is.) But all in all, I'm glad you guys are taking the time to make endings that are based around the story. Non of this "Will you save the prince and be a good guy? Or let him fall into the pit of anus-devouring wolves and be a total dick?"

Either way, I have a good feeling about Ortus and can't wait for its release!

Anus devouring wolves? Then you'd never be able to poop again!

Yeah, sometimes modern RPGs do tend to gravitate towards absolute chastity good and ridiculously nonsensical evil. I mean, look at Fable =) I'd like to think Mass Effect did a wonderful job at keeping a polarized system (Paragon/Renegade) and making it so ridiculous.

That said, Ortus's system isn't polarized, more like... um... octo... ized... can't explain more without getting into trouble

GO THE PUBLIC COMMENTARY ON MODER DAY RPG'S

Modern day RPG's armour and weapon designs suck donkey balls! Who ever's doing the designs for this game better... oh wait that's me... WELL I SHALL STILL RAGE AGAINST THE COMMUNIST RPG VEDIO GAME DEVELOPMENT STRUCTURE!

I leave a comment to show my support to you Adam. (said in an epic voice with tears in my eyes) I SUPPOERT YOU ADAM!

You do a great job and I'm glad I don't have to do it. NOW GET BACK TO THE CHICKENS!

Someone, remove the red cordial!

shad, shhhh, people are sleeping!

"The eating habits of a chicken you say. Hmmm."
"Yes, they press down on the poor defenseless worm with their claw, which by the way is comparable to an elephant crushing a man, and peck it with their beak to rip the worm in two. Finally they insert that half of the nearly dead worm into their beak and gulp it down their throat so that worm's last conscious minute will be a agonizing death in an acid pool in total darkness and with no oxygen."
"Hehehe, excellent idea. I think I'll try that on some of my neighb... er.. um.. cats."

From the work I've already seen, and from what I read from you, I have a good feeling about this game, story-wise. I especially like your attitude towards good and evil because I believe no person is purely black or pristinely white, but lies in between shades of grey. Even then, I wouldn't measure goodness in such a rigid scale. What is right? What is wrong? There is no universal answer.

(Random question. Will the whole chicken topic ever evolve into something that resembles a quest? Like maybe finding a hidden method to preserve them as emergency rations? I always love things like that. For that matter, just how big a role do sidequests play in Ortus, cause I love those, too. )

"I'm just glad nobody ever compared us to Fable"

...^_^' My apologies, though I've never said it out loud.
